Week 7, Part 2 – Spread the Word

A Christ Community Message
Tending Sheep

Lord, is there any part of me that needs some tending to?

We often say that we are living in a dry and thirsty land. But how can that be? For we live in a land with churches sprinkled throughout the landscape of our neighborhoods. Aren’t churches assigned the task of tending to the sheep? So why are we so parched and hungry? What is it about our daily spiritual diet that is leaving us malnourished? Could it be that the sheep have strayed away from their food source, the church? Or in some cases, have the sheep roamed from church to church looking for good food to eat, only to find either a water-downed gospel or a bitter, hard-to-swallow message? Or is it possible that our daily feedings have dwindled to a once a week fifteen minute grab-n-go, which is an insufficient diet for any hungry soul? Are we facing a problem of more and more shepherds feeding themselves above feeding the sheep? Have some shepherds found themselves so bogged down by the programs of feeding the sheep that they have no time or energy left to actually attend to what they plan to care for?

John 21:15-17

So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?”

He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.”

He said to him, “Feed My lambs.”

He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?”

He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.”

He said to him, “Tend My sheep.”

He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?”

And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.”

Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.”

Lord Jesus, what happened to Your instruction to the church to “Feed Your sheep”? This task was of the utmost importance to You. It was Your first instruction to the church. This was such a priority to You that You personally sat down with Peter and had a serious conversation about the matter. You even emphasized it to the point of Peter feeling grieved by Your rhetorical question. For You, Lord, equated feeding Your sheep with loving You.

Acts 20:27-30
For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God. Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves.

Lord Jesus, to serve You and love You is to attend to Your sheep and feed them Your whole counsel. Please forgive us for not feeding frequently and sufficiently. Please forgive us for neglecting to show up with the whole counsel of Your word. We are to be overseers, not simply a weekend visit. Our churches in our nation have become more like fast food restaurants than fine dining experiences. Show us how to pause long enough to truly dine, and when we do, may we find the dining experience to be a satisfying, fulfilling, and deep desire to come back for more and more. Lord, come find us, and bring us back home to sit at Your banqueting table.

May we tend to what You entrusted us to do – to love You by loving Your sheep.
